Vaccs, I never knew this
Hi All,
Put this down to my ignorance, but I always thought a vaccination prevented a cat catching/developing 'whatever' but it seems they don't, all they do is ensure a cat has milder symptoms.
I've gotta admit, this surprised me somewhat, and personally, I've always been against vaccinations, and this has just reinforced that view.
Have I been living under a stone, or is this common knowledge and do vets warn you of this?
Ian

RIP Black Tom and Beckett, not just cats, they were MY cats and the best cats ever.
Re: Vaccs, I never knew this
None o the vets we've ever had has ever warned us about anything when it comes to vaccinations... it's seems they are more interested in getting the dosh from the vaccs then actually informing people of what the vaccs do, and also the side affects they have... and also the intervals they need to be taken.
On the old, old CW, after blessed Charlie got ill after her vaccinations I did a lot of reasearch on them... and was shocked of the results I found. It turns out vaccinations are not requiered each year, reasearch shows that having them done one every 3-5 years should be sufficinet... and even if done each year they might still not work... then you got that some kitties react to them, and also the fact that they can give cancer.
I came to the conclusion that I only wanted the babies vaccinated every 3rd year... but sadly had to have them done again this year as there is no catteries that allows us not to vaccinate the babies and place them there. If we were still living at the house they wouldn't have gotten those shots... if I was still living in Scandinavia chances are I would never have vaccinated them. None of the cats we had when I lived with my parents were ever vaccinated... and none of them ever got ill.

Re: Vaccs, I never knew this
Yes Ian I was aware of that, but like Pokbg, we vaccinate ours simply because we have to if we want to put them into a cattery. In one way they're good as they do lessen the symptoms, but then again, how would we know if they would have been more ill without the vacs, we would never know.
Re: Vaccs, I never knew this
Well i never knew that!
I am going to get Saffys done as this will be her first lot but Lilly had hers last year so am not going to get her's done for another year or so.

Re: Vaccs, I never knew this
It doesn't often get questioned. I guess its part the social conscience and tbh I do believe in vaccinations, although not neccesarily as often as every year, although we do, in case we need to put them in a cattery. I didn't realise that they actually still got *flu/luc etc.*, I thought, that the vaccinations made it so that if they did contract the diseases then their bodies were able to fight it off, and their bodies battling it caused mild like symptoms, but that the vaccinations mean that they shouldn't get it full blown so to speak, or the strains they've been vaccinated against at least... I think there's never 100% garentees with vaccinations, but the 'success' rate is good enough to prevent epidemics and greatly reduces deaths through these disease amongst those that are vaccinated. But please don't take what I say as fact, its only my beliefs. But certainly I don't think many vets explain much about it and in some things is just taken for granted... certainly there will risks with vaccination and personally I've never had them explained to me, but I figure the potential risks of not vaccinating outweigh this. This prob makes no sense as am watching hells kitchen at the same time! LOL
