Third eyelid Empty Third eyelid

Post by Laura Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:00 pm

Since yesterday I have noticed Percy's third eyelid showing a bit. I know it's suppose to mean something but can't find out what. I've only seen American forum answers and I'm not sure I trust them.

They don't show all the time and don't cover half of his eye, just a bit. Anyone know if this is something to worry about?

Is it not a sign that he's under the weather in one way or another?

Yes, I think so. Although he's not behaving like he's not well. Eating fine and going in and out of the garden. Hmmm.... mysterious.

Yes it can be, Moto had this and he got an injection, just for precautionary measures, I think he had a bug, and the vets as usual were needle happy, if he's eating and doesn't seem out of sorts don't worry about it, but if after a couple of days it's till showing I would go a visit to you know where.

Sounds sensible to me. It could just be that Sir Percival is just a bit under the weather, but is getting on with it. As Kath says tho, if its still showing in a few days, best get him checked out. x

How's Sir Percival doing Laura. Hope his eye has cleared up.

I remember Buddy had a problem with his and the vet checked him and said that he had ripped his third eyelid, and he had to have it removed,. Funny thing is Buddy always seems to get injured on the right hand side never the left.

His eyes are still misbehaving, sometimes it looks like he's squinting. There's no weeping or redness.

I've just got myself in to a bit of a panic thinking he might have worms and that has caused it. I hadn't wormed him for a few months and he came in the other day and dragged his bum across the floor, which reminded me to worm him (bad mum!). But upon inspection he just had a bit of a dirty bum. I bought him worming tablets the next day so hopefully that's covered him.

I don't really know what to do.

Pok has had it. We took him to the vets. Vet couldn't find anything visible wrong with him, but the third eyelid will normally show when kitties have an infection somewhere (from a bite or tummy bug), as he had no wounds, it was assumed that he had a tummy bug. He got antibiotic injections, and also (I think, it could have been a weeks worth) 10 days of antibiotic tablets.

It took a few days for the antibiotic to work though... with me in tatters when he still had the third eyelid showing after 3 days, and his ears were still warm (how I found the first CW), but the emergency vet assured me that the antibiotics were doing their thing, and that sometimes it took a few days for it to kick in.

Big hugs to you and the handsome Percy!

Moto had a temperature, that's why his 3rd eyelid was showing, and as Pokbg said, the same thing happened with him, it took days to get better, he maybe does need a trip to the vet.

Yes, I think I would take him to the vets, at the least it'll settle your mind. Its been a few days now and is still showing so maybe he needs a little help shaking whatever it is off. With the squinting it sounds like he may have a sore eye. Remember when Boo kept 'winking' and squinting? I thought I'd checked her eye and couldn't see any reddening (just pulled her eyelid a bit to see a bit of white) and when I took her to the vet, the vet did something with pressing her eye to make her look away (I couldn't do this myself) and when more white was visible, the whole thong looked so sore and angry I felt so bad for her and she ended up with cream and an injection of antibiotics, painkiller and tablets for her and Mads.
In summary, go with your gut instinct, but its not OTT to take him to the vets with it and I personally would be sorely tempted. x

Yep, anything *strange* that last's for more than a couple of days could do with a vet visit. It might turn out to have been a waste of time and money, but on the other hand, if there is something more serious going on, you will have acted before things got worse.

My instinct is that he's okay. He's been dashing around in the snow all morning and eating like a pig. The third eyelid only shows now when he's just woken up and is half asleep. I know it probably sounds bad but I think I'll leave it for the time being. If he starts to show any unusual symptoms I'll take him straight to the vets.

Doesn't sound bad at all, you know him, you can usually get a feeling if things are wrong, he doesn't sound ill. LOL

Nope sounds fine! I assumed it was there all the time. But if he's otherwise normal and its only there when tired, then you know whats best. If you get worried tho, take him in. x
