My little sick stray.
Got a call a couple of days ago about a stray cat, so CP trapped it last night and took her to the vet this morning and she has a rectal prolapse, so they operated on her and we collected her from the vet at suppertime, got the pen all warm and ready for her, so that she would just be able to eat and settle down. Well it was all going well until she walked out of the carrier into the sleeping part of the pen and I seen she had prolapsed again. Took her straight back to the vets, he gave her an injection to make her sick ( she was hungry and just wolfed down a pack of food), which she was, then she started shaking and looked so ill and miserable. He asked me what we wanted to do as even with a second op and getting a stitch in the long term didn't look too good. But I said to the vet try it again and then if she prolapses again we should put her to sleep. God am heartbroken here, she is so tiny, very skinny and a little lamb. Somebody has dumped her by the look of it, she isn't feral, hardly gave a peep, and even in pain I was able to pick her up. So keep everything crossed that this wee soul is given a second chance. I will phone the vet tomorrow and see how she is doing.

Re: My little sick stray.
Hi Kath,
That doesn't sound good for the poor mite, here's hoping the vet can work his magic for her.
Everything crossed here for better news tomorrow, but even if it's not, she won't be suffering any longer now she's been trapped and seen to. Better that than the alternative.

Aww, poor little mite. I do hope this one works, she sounds lovely. As Ian says, she's in the best of care and at least if it doesn't work she won't suffer. Bug hugs to you lovely lady (((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))

Re: My little sick stray.
It is better, I just hope he can do something for her though, the first vet didn't stitch it in place as then the cat has such a job straining when it wants to poo and may even force the rectum out again, so this time they will put in a stitch and give her liquid parrafin ( lovely next few days am going to have), but then the problem comes when they take the stitch out too much anesthetic too soon isn't good and yet again the prolapse may occur, how many times does this have to happen before we call it a day. That's why I said give her another chance and we'll take it from there. But being PTS is still preferable to a life with that problem, in fact it wouldn't be much of a life.

Re: My little sick stray.
Indeed, yes, I would tend to agree there Kath. Its worth another shot with the stitch before calling it a day, and if the stitch fails, then being PTS would be the kindest thing to do.

Kath, I feel heartbroken for the wee mite and for you. Poor little toot, but you are doing the right thing - giving her another chance, then playing it by ear. So much for a wee body to have to deal with. (((hugs))) to you lovely lady, for giving her a chance.

Re: My little sick stray.
Thanks all, I was really listening to the vet though, I was reading between the lines but if you could have seen her, she's a semi longhaired light gray calico type kitty, A little beauty, well she would be if she wasn't so bedraggled.

Re: My little sick stray.
I'm probably showing my ignorance here, but once she's had the stitch, wouldn't a spell on a liquid diet of some sort help?
I know what goes in has to come out, but if there's no solid bulk for her digestive system/bowels to deal with, wouldn't her bladder take most of the strain and give things a chance to heal?

Well you would thinkk so, the liquid parrafin is meant to just make everything go straight through her, which seems a bit pointless, unless what happens is the nutrients are still absorbed by her but there would be no bulk, maybe she would feel more satisfied with a *meat* as opposed to just liquid. I've just phoned the vets, waste if time as all the receptionist could say was that she looked brighter, the lass didn't even see the cat last night. LOL I will find out after I've been to the eye clinic, (me this time not the kitty LOL).

Re: My little sick stray.
Well she has had another op and been givenstitches, the next 7/10 days are crucial, she has to be able to poo over the wekend, then one stitch will come out, then againshe has to bee able to go and the other stitch will come out, but even if this is successful it looks like she will be in a pen for months. It maybe that she was kicked, in a car accident or she has cancer, the vet felt hardness when he examined her but that could be poo. So we will collect her this afternoon and take her home. She's very perky and hungry, little toot I love her already. LOL

Re: My little sick stray.
Given the circumstances, that news is about as good as everyone could hope for Kath. Hopefully her staying with you in a safe enviroment with no day-to-day stress will be a big help in her recovery.

Re: My little sick stray.
I've kept her inside tonight ( and tomorrow and Sunday LOL) want to keep her warm and quiet but oh she's a madam, wants out of the cage, can't blame her really as this one is small, we will take the larger one from work tomorrow. If I can prevent her moving too much for a couple of days am hoping that will help. She has been neglected though as under her chin she is matted, really bad, you know those flat solid masses, lol what a discription. But she has some appetite and I've given her the liquid parrafin, if it works for yher, who knows I may have some myself. LOL kiddin!!!! Here's a couple of pics, now remember she's ill so not looking her best.

Oh she's stunning! What gorgeous colourings.... absolutely beautiful... here' hoping the little beauty is on the mend!
Re: My little sick stray.
Give her time to settle Kath, all this will be a massive change for her and she won't realise a spell of *bed rest* is in her best interests atm.

She's quite settled now Ian, I've put her into my artroom so Sophie can't torment her, Sophie hates other females. LOL

God am such a sap. I bubbled when I looked at her pic. What a beautiful wee girl she is Kath. Like Ian said, a bit of bed rest and calm is just what she needs (even though she doesnt agree).
